Enrollment is now open for fall spaces in MIT's five childcare centers, including a new facility expected to be completed late this summer that will nearly double the number of children that can be accommodated on campus.
The David H. Koch Childcare Center, named in honor of lead donor David H. Koch '62, SM '63, joins four other MIT facilities known collectively as the Technology Childcare Centers (TCC). TCC also includes Eastgate Childcare Center (with an infant classroom at North Court), Stata Childcare Center, Westgate Cooperative Preschool and Lincoln Childcare Center (near Lincoln Laboratory in Lexington). The latter four facilities are also open for summer enrollment.
"I am excited that MIT has responded so supportively to the need for childcare for members of the MIT community," said Kathy L. Simons, senior program manager for childcare services and work-life policy at the MIT Work-Life Center. "The David H. Koch Childcare Center will dramatically increase enrollment opportunities this fall."
Said Koch, “I have spoken with many MIT researchers who are at that point in life, trying to balance demanding careers with the responsibilities of raising young children. My hope is that the new children’s center will make it easier for them to focus on their work knowing that their families are well cared for.”
The Technology Childcare Centers are administered by the MIT Work-Life Center and managed by Bright Horizons Family Solutions. The David H. Koch Childcare Center will be located at 219 Vassar St. It will add an additional 126 spaces for infants, toddlers and preschoolers for a total of 268 TCC spaces on campus and 127 in Lexington.
TCC enrollment information, tuition rates and application forms are at http://hrweb.mit.edu/mitchildcare/enrolling/index.html. Scholarships are available for qualifying families through the MIT Childcare Scholarship Programs for Employees, Postdoctoral Associates and Postdoctoral Fellows. Simons notes that in 2013-14 there will be an increase in the income cap for eligibility.
The MIT Work-Life Center offers several other childcare services, including a program that makes backup childcare available to benefits-eligible employees 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For more information, visit http://hrweb.mit.edu/worklife/welcome. Also, beginning in July 2013, the MIT Work-Life Center will introduce a new one-year pilot program offering subsidized backup childcare to MIT graduate student families. Details on the new program, which is being funded by the Provost and the Graduate Student Council, will be available soon on the center's website.
