Thirteen MIT students awarded National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowships

The U.S. Department of Defense has announced the 2016 recipients of its National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship. Thirteen MIT doctoral students were among those recognized.

The highly competitive fellowships, awarded to U.S. citizens and nationals who intend to pursue a doctoral degree in one of 15 supported disciplines, last for three years and pay for full tuition and all mandatory fees, a monthly stipend, and up to $1,000 a year in medical insurance.

The winning students (and their affiliated field) from MIT were:

  • Omar Abudayyeh '12 (biosciences) of the Harvard-MIT Health, Sciences, and Technology program in the Institute for Medical Engineering and Science;
  • Michael Cohen (computer and computational sciences) of the Department of Brain and Cognitive Science and the McGovern Institute for Brain Research;
  • Alexander Creely (physics) of the Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering and the Plasma Science and Fusion Center;
  • Marco Cusumano-Towner (computer and computational sciences) of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science;
  • Eric Hansen (chemistry) of the Department of Chemistry;
  • Meghan Jones (oceanography) of the MIT/WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography/Applied Science and Engineering in the Department of Earth, Atmosphere and Planetary Sciences;
  • Jonathan Li (computer and computational sciences) of the Computational and Systems Biology Initiative;
  • Andrew Licini (chemistry) of the Department of Chemistry;
  • Kristen Railey '13 (electrical engineering) of the MIT/WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography/Applied Science and Engineering in the Department of Earth, Atmosphere and Planetary Sciences;
  • Taqiyyah Safi (electrical engineering) of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science;
  • Kushal Seetharam (electrical engineering) of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science;
  • Todd Sheerin (aeronautical and astronautical engineering) of the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics; and
  • Emiko Zumbro, (materials science and engineering) of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

The fellowships are sponsored by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the Army Research Office, the High Performance Computing Modernization Program, and the Office of Naval Research, under the direction of the Director of Defense Research and Engineering and administered by the American Society for Engineering Education.
