The MIT Division of Student Life, in conjunction with the friends and family of professor emeritus and former Dean of Student Affairs, Arthur C. Smith, have established the Arthur C. Smith Memorial Fund to support a student-initiated idea by awarding a grant worth up to $2000. Applications must be turned in by Sept. 30 to the Student Service office either via hard copy or email: sao-staff@mit.edu.
The purpose of the Arthur C. Smith Memorial Fund Student Life Grant is to support MIT student-initiated ideas that create a sense of community within the Institute and achieve a positive impact on people in and beyond the campus community. Grants will be awarded every fall semester starting this October.
Smith served as MIT’s dean for undergraduate education and student affairs from 1990 through 1995. Noted for his “deep understanding” of MIT, he was a strong advocate for students and encouraged the idea of building the Institute community, two things that this fund will support.
Smith began his time at MIT in 1959 as an assistant professor of electrical engineering. He later became an associate professor before being promoted to professor in 1968. During his time at MIT, Smith served on numerous committees that focused on student affairs and academic policies. He also was a member of the Minority Student Issues group.
