MIT was ranked second in the World Reputation Rankings, a new ranking from United Kingdom–based Times Higher Education that is based exclusively on worldwide universities’ standing among academics across the world.
The top 100 reputation list is a subsidiary of the prestigious annual Times Higher Education World University Rankings, which is published each fall (MIT placed third on that list last year). The new ranking looks at institutional reputations for world-class performance in teaching and research.
MIT placed second on the new list behind Harvard University; the University of California, Berkeley (4th), Stanford University (5th), Princeton University (7th), Yale University (9th) and Caltech (10th) were the other U.S. universities in the top 10. In total, there were 45 U.S. universities in the global top 100.
The rankings are based on a survey of more than 13,000 experienced academics from around the world. The invitation-only survey received responses from people in 131 countries. The average respondent had been working at an institution of higher education for more than 16 years and had published more than 50 research papers.
