The MIT Housing Office this week announced its 2011 Summer Housing Utilization Plan, specifying which undergraduate dorms will be open for summer students, which buildings will be closed for repair and renovation, and which buildings will be available for summer guests and conferences.
MIT undergraduates staying on campus will be located in East Campus and MacGregor. Program and conferences will be consolidated into Baker, Burton Connor, McCormick, Senior House and Simmons.
Five residences will be closed completely: Bexley, New, Next, Random, and the Phoenix Group at Ashdown House. New, Next, and Random will undergo major construction and renovation projects.
This marks the second year of a new program to make efficient and productive use of MIT’s summer housing stock. Last year, under the new policy of closing and consolidation, Residential Life realized more than $400,000 in savings while completing several critical improvement projects to several dorms.
The proposed utilization plan was discussed and approved by the Housing Strategy Group (HSG), a committee of students, faculty and staff chaired by the Dean for Student Life and the Dean for Graduate Education. The Housing Office also consults each year with Housemasters, DormCon, the UA, and other stakeholders before finalizing the plan.
