The School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences has announced a new fellowship for MIT students: The six-month term as an MIT Palitz Fellow begins this spring semester with preparation with a faculty supervisor, and is followed by a three-month program in The Hague, Netherlands, conducting research in and around the Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis. Applications for the new fellowship are due by March 11.
Research areas
Areas of study for the Palitz Fellowship can include any aspect of culture, painting or history in the Dutch and Flemish Golden Age; for example: the art market; economic history; history of science, horticulture or cartography; or the technologies of print making and book production. The Palitz Fellow’s research must be, in some way, related to the Mauritshuis collection.
Program particulars
MIT students may be freshmen, sophomores or juniors at the time of application, and must be American citizens. Preference will be given to students who have some background in the subject of the fellowship. Students will work with the director of the fellowship in the spring term to learn more about the history and culture of the Netherlands, and to prepare for a cultural exchange.
On completion of the fellowship, the student will present two oral reports on the experience and the research findings — one to the Friends of the Mauritshuis in the Netherlands, and another in the fall to the American Friends of the Mauritshuis in New York.
Applications will consist of a 1,000-word proposal, a one-page resume, two letters of recommendation, and an MIT transcript.
