To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, MIT will hold a series of events throughout the week of April 20-23.
One major event will be an Earth Day Fair featuring workshops, displays, massages and tips about food, transportation, recycling, and energy conservation, centered on this year's theme, “40 Years of Earth Days: How to be Green in 40 Ways.” These activities will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 22, in Lobby 10, the Bush Room and, weather permitting, outside of the Stratton Student Center.
The Earth Day celebration will include a wide variety of activities, focusing on how people can make their lives more sustainable. Among these activities will be student displays describing current energy research taking place at the Institute, and an MIT Energy Initiative-sponsored colloquium by Bill McDonough called “Cradle to Cradle: A Strategy of Hope.” McDonough is the founding principal of William McDonough + Partners, which focuses on “ecologically, socially, and economically intelligent architecture.” Later in the day, four of MIT’s residence halls will feature dinner menus of “low carbon” foods, sponsored by restaurant company Bon Appétit.
A full list of the activities planned for this year’s celebration of Earth Day and Earth Week, organized by groups and departments from MIT’s student, academic, and staff communities, can be found on the MIT Earth Day web site: http://web.mit.edu/earthday/
MIT Earth Day 2010 is organized by the Campus Activities Complex, Department of Facilities, Division of Student Life, Environment, Health & Safety Headquarters, MITEI, Working Group Recycling Committee, Sustainability at MIT, G-Science Policy Initiative, UG-Solar Electric Vehicle Team.
