The 2003 Community Giving at MIT Campaign raised $358,807 from 1,112 employee and retiree donors. Of that total, $256,369 was pledged to the United Way of Massachusetts Bay, $88,453 to the MIT Community Service Fund, and $13,985 to other health and human service agencies chosen by donors.
"MIT employees and retirees come together for important efforts like the Community Giving Campaign and ask us how they can help. They demonstrate generosity in so many ways--through financial contributions, volunteerism, clothing donations, serving on committees and being engaged citizens. I'm very proud of the MIT community and what we accomplish together," said John R. Curry, executive vice president of MIT and chair of the Community Giving Campaign.
This year's campaign began on Halloween morning with a kickoff at which department representatives and other volunteers in costume distributed information and candy to MIT commuters. The campaign continued with a book sale that raised money for the United Way of Massachusetts Bay and the Community Service Fund. Clothing drives on campus and at Lincoln Lab provided winter garments and personal care items to local human service agencies during December and January.
The campaign steering committee will host a thank-you party in the spring to recognize department representatives for their efforts in informingcolleagues about the campaign and encouraging participation, which helped making the campaign a success.
Employees who have not contributed but would still like to make a donation may visit the Community Giving Campaign headquarters in Room 50-005 or call 253-7914. Donations are accepted throughout the year.
