MIT observes World AIDS Day today

MIT will observe World AIDS Day today (Dec. 4) with information booths and a chocolate buffet in Lobby 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Several panels from the AIDS Memorial Quilt will hang in Lobby 10. MIT Medical's Health Education service, the Children's AIDS Program at Boston Medical Center, the Children's Hospital AIDS Program, Community Servings and the Pendulum Project will have information tables. Visitors also may pick up free red ribbons.

The Women's League, which coordinated the event, will host a chocolate buffet with desserts donated by local bakeries, restaurants, catering services and members of the MIT community. Tickets to the buffet are $5. Those without a sweet tooth can purchase a raffle ticket instead, for a chance to win an overnight stay at a Boston hotel or a free dinner at an area restaurant. Proceeds will benefit Community Servings, a nonprofit organization that delivers free hot meals to people in greater Boston who are living with AIDS.

World AIDS Day began in 1988 as a result of a call by the World Summit of Ministers of Health on Programs for AIDS Prevention to open channels of communication, strengthen the exchange of information and forge a spirit of social tolerance.
