The 2001 Community Giving campaign, which raises funds for the United Way of Massachusetts Bay, the MIT Community Service Fund and other charities, will kick off on Wednesday, Oct. 31.
At an orientation session on Oct. 10, campaign solicitors (volunteers from around campus who will represent departments, labs and centers) learned about the broad range of needs in the local community. Guest speakers included Chancellor Phillip L. Clay; Alison Vaughan, executive director of Tutoring Plus (a funded agency of the Community Service Fund); and Patricia Brady, project manager in the executive vice president's office and volunteer for the United Way of Massachusetts Bay Allocations Committee.
The campaign, which runs through Dec. 31, aims to raise $375,000 from the MIT community; the United Way of Massachusetts Bay's overall goal is $56 million.
