As of Monday, Dec. 5, the MIT United Way campaign had received pledges totaling $144,900, or 45 percent of the 1994 goal of $322,000. Thus far, 696 donors have contributed, including 23 Leadership givers who have pledged at least $1,000 apiece, said employee campaign manager Elizabeth Mulcahy.
As part of the annual United Way campaign, there will be a clothing drive December 12-16 and a bake sale on Thursday, Dec. 15.
The clothing drive will benefit four United Way agencies: Bridge Over Troubled Waters, which provides services to runaways and homeless youth; Cambridge Family & Children's Services, which offers help for homeless families, adoption, foster care, and services for families with developmentally disabled members; Little Sisters of the Assumption Family Health Services/Project Hope, which aids homeless women with children; and Shelter, Inc., which also provides services to the homeless.
There will be five drop-off locations on campus for clothing and other items that are needed, which include baby clothes and toys, disposable diapers, toiletries, new underwear, sheets and towels, and winter items such as hats and gloves. Locations with marked bins will be:
- Lobby 7
- Building E18-E19 lobby
- Sloan School (first floor near elevators at the Wadsworth Street entrance)
- Medical Department atrium
- Office of Special Community Services, Rm 20A-019 (which also serves as the United Way and MITAC headquarters).
The bake sale will take place December 15 starting at 11:30am in Lobby 7 under the United Way thermometer banner. Baked goods will be provided by the campaign's chief solicitors and others. Most items will cost $1; coffee will also be available. Proceeds will go into the campaign fund. Those who would like to donate baked goods for the sale are asked to call the Office of Special Community Services at x3-7914.
After the campaign has concluded, there will be a drawing for several prizes from the names of those who have made donations. The two grand prizes are a pair of round-trip tickets to anywhere in the contiguous United States, donated by Thomas Cook Travel, Inc. and Northwest Airlines. Second prize will be an overnight stay for two at the Inn at Harvard in Harvard Square. Third prize is a $25 gift certificate at the Boston Sail Loft restaurant on Memorial Drive. Other prizes are also possible.
