WBUR’s Maddie Browning spotlights “List Projects 32: Elif Saydam,” a new exhibit at the MIT List Visual Arts Center by Elif Saydam that explores gentrification through art. Saydam paints “urban scenes like gas stations and apartment buildings, then layers them with gold,” explains Browning. “Saydam’s work references historical painting traditions like miniature painting and illuminated manuscripts.”

Prof. Behnaz Farahi and her team have created “Gaze to the Stars,” an art installation that features video projections of eyes onto the MIT Dome while sharing stories of aspiration, struggle, longing, and hope, reports Emily Maher for WCVB. “Farahi and her team created a space, a pod, where people looked into a screen of stars as their eyes were scanned,” explains Maher. “Next, an AI voice began encouraging them to share their stories.”

Prof. Behnaz Farahi speaks with GBH’s The Culture Show host Jared Bowen about her new eye-catching work “Gaze to the Stars,” an exhibit that will transform the MIT Dome into a living canvas, showcasing video projections of eyes gazing at the stars, as part of the Artfinity art festival. “We are very excited about the possibility of bringing the community at MIT together and the question was how the community, MIT and beyond, can get the sense of community, the sense of unity, the sense of connectedness,” says Farahi on the inspiration behind her work.

As part of MIT’s Artfinity festival - a new festival of the arts at MIT featuring 80 free performing and visual arts events, celebrating creativity and community – this month’s After Dark event on Thursday, March 13th at the MIT Museum will be free and open to the public, reports Marianna Orozco for The Boston Globe. Attendees will be able to enjoy “a night of activities, including a ‘Flash Portrait’ drawing and textile design, as well as live DJ sets, open exhibits by faculty, and a talk from Behnaz Farahi, the interdisciplinary designer behind ‘Gaze to the Stars,’ which has brought the MIT dome to life,” explains Orozco.

CBS News reporter Chris Tanaka spotlights the 20th anniversary of the Catalyst Collaborative – a collaboration between MIT and two non-profit theater companies aimed at creating and presenting plays that deepen public understanding of science and technology. "I think some of the scientists gave ideas, stories of science to the theater people, some of which later became plays,” says Prof. Alan Lightman on the Catlyst Collaborative. “And I think the scientists learned the way that artists think.”

MIT’s Artfinity festival kicked off with a performance of “SONIC JUBILANCE” at the newly opened Edward and Joyce Linde Music Building, reports Maddie Browning for WBUR. The campus-wide festival, which runs through May 2, is open to the public and features student, faculty and staff participation in “concerts, augmented reality experiences, exhibitions, films and more,” writes Browning. Artfinity is an opportunity "to show that the arts are very important and very central to the lives of people at MIT,” said Prof. Marcus Thompson, festival co-lead.

Prof. Carlo Ratti, curator of the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale, speaks with Dezeen reporter Lizzie Crook about how this year’s event will be a “science-heavy edition of the festival examining the changing role of architecture at a time of environmental instability.” Says Ratti: "Architecture starts when the environment is against us and we adapt it to somewhere where we can live. We can look at this through science. There's going to be a lot of science in this year's biennale.”

MIT’s Artfinity Festival kicks off on Saturday, February 15th with a celebration of the new Edward and Joyce Linde Music Building and Thomas Tull Concert Hall featuring a free afternoon open house and evening concert, writes A.Z. Madonna for The Boston Globe. “What this building brings to us is support for performance of all different types of music, whether it’s classical or jazz or world music, and then the ability to support various functions with our students,” says Keeril Makan, associate dean of SHASS.

Cambridge Day reporter Susan Saccoccia spotlights the new Edward and Joyce Linde Music Building, which opens to the public on Saturday, February 15th, with a celebratory concert called “Sonic Jubilance,” the start of a “monthslong festival of 80 events across the campus, free and open to the public.” Prof. Marcus Thompson notes: “The extent of art-making on the MIT campus is equal to that of a major city. It’s a miracle that it’s all right here, by people in science and technology who are absorbed in creating a new world and who also value the past, present and future of music and the arts.”

“SPACE,” a theater production from The Catalyst Collaborative at MIT and Brit d’Arbeloff Women in Science, will premiere at the Central Square Theater and run through February 23, reports Jacquinn Sinclair for The Boston Globe. The production “centers on the Mercury 13, a group of women who passed the same tests as men to be eligible to join the astronaut program in the 1960s, but ultimately were not granted access to the NASA space program in 1962,” explains Sinclair. “The story meshes fiction with historical records to amplify the work of trailblazing pilots, engineers, and activists who fought to ascend past the glass ceiling of gender discrimination in aviation.”

In a discussion with Metropolis reporter Francisco Brown, Prof. Carlo Ratti, curator of the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale, discusses his vision for this year’s festival. “I think the biggest challenge of architecture today, which we are trying to address both with our practice at CRA (Carlo Ratti Associati) and our research at MIT, is to create a better alliance between natural and artificial systems,” Ratti explains.

Boston Globe reporter Mark Feeney spotlights the “Moving Objects” exhibit at the MIT Museum, which features 50 or so items from the museum’s permanent collection. “Over the course of five years, 140 truckloads got moved when the museum transferred its holdings from several sites to a new storage facility, in Medford,” Feeney writes. “The items in the show were chosen because in one way or another the movers found themselves affected by them. They were amusing or beautiful or unexpected or otherwise unusual.”
