On Tuesday, April 5, the MIT International Design Center (IDC) is hosting a design conversation featuring Rick Rundell, technology and innovation strategist at Autodesk. This event, which will begin at 4 p.m. at the IDC (Building N52, 3rd floor), is free and open to the MIT community and to the public.

Design thinking has become a critical component of a successful business plan that empowers companies to utilize unique skill sets across multiple dimensions to improve customer outcomes. Autodesk is one such company that has become a leader in design, providing 3-D design software for global markets.

In his role at Autodesk, Rick Rundell has launched building information modeling, introduced conceptual building design tools, and launched new applications for construction.

Rick’s presentation, “Tech Trends in Design: Reality computing, digital fabrication and design robotics,” will explore current research at Autodesk and technology trends influencing design — including reality computing, digital fabrication, and design robotics — as well as the 32,000 square-foot innovation lab he is developing in Boston for research into these topics for the building industry. The Autodesk BUILD Space is scheduled to open in Boston's Seaport Innovation District mid-2016.

Rick joined Autodesk in 2002 with the acquisition of Revit Technology Corporation. An experienced, registered architect prior to joining the software industry, Rick contributed to the design and management of projects in healthcare, biomedical research, and science teaching and research on prominent campuses across the northeastern U.S. He holds a BA in engineering science from Dartmouth College and a Master’s degree in Architecture from Harvard University.

The IDC Design Conversation series brings a prominent figure from industry to offer thoughts on interdisciplinary themes in design. These talks are meant to foster an ongoing and Institute-wide discourse on the evolving nature of the processes, tools, and outcomes of design.
