TRANSFORM, a shape-changing furniture display developed by the Media Laboratory's Tangible Media group, won a Platinum A’Design Award in the arts, crafts, and ready-made design category. Winners were selected by a panel of 70 international jurors, comprising designers, members of the press, and academics.
TRANSFORM fuses technology and design to transform a piece of still furniture into a dynamic machine driven by a stream of data and energy. It aims to inspire viewers with both unexpected transformations and the aesthetics of the complex machine in motion. It was first exhibited in the Lexus Design Amazing exhibit in Milan in April 2014.
The TRANSFORM team is led by Professor Hiroshi Ishii, the Jerome B. Wiesner Professor of Media Arts and Sciences and head of the Tangible Media research group. Other contributors include Tangible Media group members Daniel Leithinger, Sean Follmer, Philipp Schoessler, Basheer Tome, Felix Heibeck, and alumnus Amit Zoran.
