MIT sailing head coach Matt Lindblad, along with former team captain Bill Widnall ’58 and Riley Schutt ’09, won the International One Design (IOD) 2013 World Championship hosted by Fishers Island Yacht Club last week. The contingent, which also included Jonathan Farrar and Richard Feeney, captured the title with a one-point edge and was three points ahead of the third-place boat.

Teams qualify from fleets around the world to compete in the annual event. Representatives of the Marblehead, Mass., fleet, Lindblad’s team squared off against a 10-boat field that featured many former world champions. In the 10 rotations that were held, the IOD champions won the eighth race, finished second on three occasions, and secured the crown with a third-place performance in the last outing.

“We had a phenomenal team that battled all the way through the event against great competition,” Lindblad said. “Jonathan, Richard and Riley made all the difference to Bill and I.”
