Architecture professor Sheila Kennedy and her partner Frano Violich — principals of Boston’s Kennedy & Violich Architecture (KVA MATx) — are part of a team that has recently won the Minneapolis Riverfront Design Competition, the largest design competition in the city’s history and the first phase of a larger riverfront initiative. Working with KVA is the Tom Leader Studio of Berkeley, Calif.; Interfuve Inc. (river hydrology); and nine interdisciplinary Minnesota partners.
The TLS/KVA team was selected out of a pool of submissions from 14 countries on five continents. A guiding principle in the TLS/KVA RiverFIRST proposal is to leverage parkland, public education and public space to improve the health of the river and the health of the city and its neighborhoods and to act as a catalyst to accelerate the transition from smokestack industry to a green economy.
