John Benedick, current assistant director of athletics and former water polo and swimming and diving coach, will be inducted next month into the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will be held on Friday, Nov. 18, in conjunction with the CWPA Eastern Championship banquet.
Benedick becomes the 20th inductee to the CWPA Hall of Fame and just the sixth coach selected. He spent 22 years at the helm of the Tech water polo squad and remains the all-time winningest coach (158 wins) in the program’s 42-year history. During his coaching career, Benedick was instrumental in the formation of the CWPA and currently serves as the league’s president.
Under Benedick, 10 student-athletes received All-America recognition from the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) and 15 All-New England honorees. He led the Cardinal and Gray to the Division III Eastern championship in 1991. Benedick also coached the MIT swimming and diving teams 22 years, during which time he saw more than 50 of his athletes receive All-America accolades and three win national championships.
Benedick took over an administrative role in 1997 and currently helps oversee one of the most expansive intercollegiate athletic programs in the country. He was instrumental in the planning of MIT's current facility, the Zesiger Center, visiting more than 20 top facilities to draw ideas and provide feedback as to what the institution needed in an aquatics and recreation facility.
The CWPA Hall of Fame ceremony and Eastern Championship banquet will be held on Friday, Nov. 18, at the Holiday Inn-Boston/Somerville. Seating for the ceremony begins at 6:15 p.m.
