Jason Pontin has joined Technology Review, MIT's Magazine of Innovation, as editor-in-chief. The announcement was made June 21 by R. Bruce Journey, president and CEO of Technology Review, Inc., and publisher of the magazine.
Pontin, 37, spent seven years at the helm of Red Herring, where he directed all print and online editorial, growing the magazine into an international business with more than 350,000 readers. He has written for many national and international publications including The Financial Times, The Economist, Wired and The Believer, and he has been a frequent guest on CNN, CNNMoney, ABC News, MSNBC, CNBC and NPR.
Most recently Pontin served as editor-in-chief of The Acumen Journal, a monthly publication covering the business, economic and political implications of discoveries in the life sciences. Pontin succeeds Robert Buderi, who returned to the editor-at-large position earlier this spring.
At Technology Review, Pontin will oversee all editorial aspects of the company's ongoing growth strategy, which includes:
- An aggressive international expansion effort that currently includes foreign-language editions available in China, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands
- International distribution of Technology Review's award-winning content through publishing partners in Hungary, Russia, and South Africa
- A web business, www.technologyreview.com, which has grown 75 percent in traffic over the past 12 months
- Expansion through specialty newsletters such as MIT Technology Insider and Semiconductor Innovation Letter (jointly published with Dow Jones VentureWire)
- Technology Review's Emerging Technologies Conference at MIT, an annual event that brings together world-renowned innovators, investors and key senior managers and leaders in technology and business to discuss how they are profiting from emerging technologies and innovations.
