The Cambridge Election Commission has notified MIT of a few changes at the polls that may affect campus residents beginning with the state primary election on Sept. 14.
In the upcoming election, first-time voters who registered by mail must show identification. A current utility bill, driver's license, rent receipt, lease, bank statement, paycheck, government check, or copy of a valid photo ID with the voter's name and Cambridge address willl all be considered valid ID.
This change is a result of Congress' passage of the Help America Vote Act in 2002. Prior to its passage Massachusetts did not require identification to vote.
The 2002 law also replaced the category of "escrow" voter with the new category of "provisional" voter, so that no voter will be turned away. A voter whose name is not on the list or a first-time voter who registered by mail and who does not have identification will be allowed to cast a provisional ballot.
In addition, ballot boxes now have been programmed to reject ballots with overvotes (voting twice for the same office). The voter will be given the opportunity to correct the ballot. Election officials will be on hand to provide assistance.
