Event focuses on aging ears
"Living Well With the Aging Ear" is the topic of this year's Catherine N. Stratton Aging Successfully Lecture, which will take place Thursday, May 6 from 3:30 to 6 p.m. in Wong Auditorium.
Hearing loss is not confined to the elderly, though aging is an important factor. The talk will examine the causes of hearing loss as well as treatments and technologies. The event, which is sponsored by MIT Medical and the Women's League, will feature a panel of specialists affiliated with the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and Harvard Medical School. The moderator will be William M. Kettyle, director of MIT Medical Department. A question-and-answer period will follow the presentations.
New schedule for MIT Excellence Awards
Nominations for the MIT Excellence Awards are now being accepted year-round. These awards honor the exceptional achievements of staff across the Institute in the categories of leadership, client service, collaboration and innovation, community service and work-life balance.
To be eligible for the 2004-05 awards, nominations should be submitted by Oct. 13 (nominations turned in after that date will be considered for the 2005-06 awards.) The 2004-05 awards ceremony will take place on March 2, 2005 in Kresge Auditorium at noon. For more information about criteria and the nomination form, see http://web.mit.edu/hr/rewards/excellence. Consumer electronics symposium
The Media Lab, together with the Consumer Electronics Association, is hosting a May 10 symposium on the future of consumer electronics. Topics at "Designing Bits and Pieces" will include new materials and their design/fabrication methods, communication networks, incremental and limitless scalability, self-managing device ecosystems, power sources, sensors and displays.
The event also marks the launch of CELab, a new consumer electronics research program at the Media Lab directed by principal research scientist V. Michael Bove Jr.
"Designing Bits and Pieces" begins at 9 a.m. in Kresge Auditorium. It will be followed by a Media Lab open house and reception. It is open to the MIT community, but online preregistration is required at http://cel.media.mit.edu. The site includes the day's agenda and information on the CELab.
SEED Academy presentation
MIT's Saturday Engineering Enrichment and Discovery (SEED) Academy, an academic enrichment and career exploration program for public high school students from Boston and Cambridge, will hold its final presentation reception on Thursday, May 13 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the Student Center's Lobdell Dining Hall.
Groups of students will show their projects in aeronautics and astronautics, mechanical engineering and renewable energy sources. Those interested in attending should RSVP by Friday, May 7 to Nicole Stark (nstark@mit.edu, 253- 5063).
