Soldier design contest winners to be named
The Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies (ISN) will hold the final judging of its first annual Soldier Design Competition on Tuesday, Feb. 17 in Wong Auditorium. Eleven teams, made up mostly of MIT undergraduates, will present working prototypes of nine different devices or systems useful to infantry soldiers, including pocket-sized bolt cutters, a silent Velcro-like fastening technology, and a microelectric power generator that recycles body heat.
The event begins with a poster session at 5:30 p.m.; presentations start at 6:30 p.m. A panel of judges from the Army, industry and MIT will award prizes of $5,000, $3,000, and $2,000 to the top three designs, respectively.

Pitch ideas at center's Innovation Showcase
The Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation is launching an Innovation Showcase at its annual IdeaStream symposium on April 8. At the Innovation Showcase (co-sponsored by the student-run MIT Venture Capital and Private Equity Club), faculty and students can pitch their technology ideas to venture capitalists and entrepreneurs.
There will be breakout sessions on topics including life sciences, information technology, materials science and alternative energy. Each will feature four to six technology ideas selected from a pool of applicants, followed by a 45-minute poster and networking session when presenters may share ideas with IdeaStream attendees.
MIT faculty and students should submit ideas electronically by noon on Wednesday, Feb. 25 (a full business plan or finished product is not required). Presenters will be notified by March 18. For more information, go to http://web.mit.edu/deshpandecenter/ideastream2004/showcase.html.
Exhibit seeks artwork
Submissions of artwork by graduate students and their spouses and partners are due on Monday, March 15 for "The Hidden Jewels of Our Community," a juried art exhibit sponsored by Spouses & Partners @ MIT. The show opens on April 23 in the Bush Room, with an opening night/charity fund-raiser on April 22.

Students may submit writing contest entries
The 2003-04 Ilona Karmel Writing Prizes Competition is now accepting manuscript submissions (essays, plays, poetry, fiction and technical papers) from undergraduate and graduate students. The deadline for entries is 5 p.m. on Friday, April 2.
