Zesiger offers snacks
A refreshment center is now open in the lobby of the Al and Barrie Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center. The opening of the shop, which is run by 660 Corp., coincides with the one-year anniversary of the Zesiger Center. The refreshment center will open each Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. and will close between 5 and 9 p.m. depending on demand. Weekend hours will be determined based on demand. The shop will sell energy bars and other snacks as well as items such as cameras and umbrellas. Juice and coffee machines will also be installed.
Report concerns on animal care
Vice President for Research and Associate Provost Alice Gast and the chair of the Committee on Animal Care are once again soliciting any information which would aid MIT's effort to maintain the humane care of animals used in research.
The committee was established to ensure that all MIT researchers working with animals comply with federal, state, local and institutional regulations on animal care. To that end, it inspects animals, animal facilities and labs, and reviews all research and teaching exercises that involve animals before experiments are performed.
If you have information about inadequate animal care or any information that would help the committee fulfill its responsibilities, contact the committee at 253-9436 or Gast at 253-1403. All concerns will be handled confidentially and will be investigated by the committee.
Draper Lab Tech Expo
Draper Lab will hold its annual Technology Exposition next week. The event will be open to MIT students and faculty on Wednesday, Oct. 1 from 12:30 to 4 p.m. and Thursday, Oct. 2 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Exhibit projects will include space systems, autonomous and semiautonomous land- and air-based vehicles, microfabrication technology for or-gan tissue engineering, micron-gap thermophotovoltaic power cell technology, and commercialization projects by Navigator Technology Ven-tures LLC, Draper's venture capital subsidiary. Several projects have been worked on by students, particularly through the Draper Fellow Program. Visitors must present photo ID such as a driver's license. For information, call 258-2600.
Workshop on faculty entrepreneurship
The Deshpande Center for Tech-nological Innovation will host a faculty-only entrepreneurship workshop and lunch on "Managing the Faculty's Role in a Start-Up" on Wednesday, Oct. 1 from noon to 1:30 p.m. Panelists will be professors Yosef Sheffi, founder of five logistics-related companies; Lawrence Evans, founder of AspenTech; and John Vander Sande and Greg Yurek, founders of American Superconductor. Talk on biotechnology
Margaret Mellon, director of the Food and Environment Program for the Union of Concerned Scientists, will speak on "The Wages of Hype: Agricultural Biotechnology After 25 Years" on Friday, Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. in Bartos Theater.
