Deveau to perform with Pro Arte Orchestra of Boston on May 18
A performance by senior lecturer David Deveau of Mozart's "Piano Concerto No. 24" on May 18 with the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Boston features the premiere of new cadenzas written especially for him by Institute Professor John Harbison. The 3 p.m. concert at Harvard's Sanders Theater (45 Quincy St., Cambridge) under the direction of Isaiah Jackson also includes the Boston premiere of Harbison's "The Most Often Used Chords."
The pre-concert "Aperitif" at 2 p.m. features Harbison's "Folk Songs" and a post-concert "Ask the Artists" session moderated by Steven Ledbetter will spotlight Deveau, Harbison and Jackson. Alum's one-man show at the Boston Center for the Arts through May 17
Alumnus Michael Mack (S.B. 1988 in humanities) will perform his one-man show "Hearing Voices (Speaking in Tongues)" through Saturday, May 17 at the Boston Center for the Arts (539 Tremont St.). The monologue draws on his memories of growing up with a mother who suffered from mental illness. In a Boston Globe profile, Mack admitted he got his start as a writer accidentally, by taking a poetry course while studying at the Sloan School of Management. "I thought it would be an easy grade, and it would free up time for the important stuff," he told the Globe, crediting visiting writer Maxine Kumin (who taught at MIT from 1984-87) with encouraging him to continue.
