Sports awards handed out to student athletes

Students have been recognized for their athletic achievements with Institute-wide awards as well as honors in several individual sports.

Several prizes were given out at the MIT Awards Convocation on May 13. The Harold J. Pettegrove Award in recognition of outstanding service to intramural athletics went to Todd S. Stefanik , a graduate student in materials science and engineering from Dundee, N.Y.

The Pewter Bowl Award, presented to the female senior who has shown the highest qualities of inspiration and leadership in contributing to women's athletics, went to Caroline M. Purcell , a senior in civil and environmental engineering from New York.

The Admiral Edward L. Cochrane Award, given to a male senior who has shown the highest qualities of humility, leadership and inspiration in intercollegiate athletics, was presented to Yuval Mazor , a senior in electrical engineering and computer science (EECS) from Newton.

The Betsy Schumacker Award, given for excellence in athletic competition by a female undergraduate, was presented to Princess Imoukhuede , a senior in chemical engineering from Matteson, Ill.

The Howard W. Johnson Award, presented to the male senior athlete of the year, went to Sean Montgomery , a graduate student in mechanical engineering from Greentown, Penn.

The Malcom G. Kispert Awards for the male and female scholar/athletes of the year were given to Michele Verticchio , a senior in chemical engineering from Calverton, N.Y., and Daniel R. Feldman , a senior in civil and environmental engineering from Portland, Ore.

DEPARTMENTAL AWARDS

The following awards are presented by the Department of Athletics. Winners of the Burton R. Anderson Award, given to the intercollegiate manager of the year, are Adeline L. Kuo , a senior in management from River Edge, N.J., and Anne M. Latham , a senior in biology from Greenville, Ky. The Varsity Club Awards, given to the outstanding male and female freshmen athletes of the year were presented to Merritt S. Tam of Boothwyn, Penn. and Nicholas O. Sidelnik of Lake Quiviva, Kan.

The Phillip A. Trussell '56 Prize, which recognizes male and female undergraduate student-athletes who demonstrate skill, sportsmanship and levity, were given to Kelli A. Griffin , a junior in materials science and engineering from Tiverton, R.I., and Gregory T. Walker , a junior in EECS from Towson, Md.

The Gold Awards, given for the highest degree of student leadership and service in the administration of all levels of athletics at MIT, went to Rebecca E. Clinton , a junior in brain and cognitive sciences from Seattle; Ignacio Perez de la Cruz , a graduate student in biology from Portsmouth, R.I.; and Rory P. Pheiffer , a senior in mechanical engineering from Novi, Mich.

STRAIGHT 'T'

The Straight "T" Award is the highest award given for athletic excellence at MIT. Straight "T" criteria differ for each sport.

Basketball (women)-- Crystal A. Russell , a junior in biology from West Reading, Penn.

Crew (women)--freshmen Alison Baker of San Diego; Kathy Hufford of Woodbridge, Va.; Caroline Saouma of Boulder, Colo.; Samantha Scanlon of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and Emily Smith of Des Moines, Iowa.

Fencing (men)-- Neal K. Devaraj , a senior in chemistry from Manhattan Beach, Calif.
