Three closely guarded headstrong sisters hit the streets of a tropical carnival in search of men; a high-priced courtesan with a loose pistol takes a fancy to a wild and mangy soldier of fortune; men fight on every corner; and a prostitute plans the perfect crime.
Scenes from spring break? No, these are the elements of Aphra Behn's The Rover, a play being presented by the Shakespeare Ensemble on March 17-18 and March 22-24 at 8pm and also at 4pm on March 18 in the Student Center's Sala de Puerto Rico.
Aphra Behn (1640-1689) is considered one of the most prolific dramatists of the Restoration period. Lecturer Kim Mancuso, director of the production, calls her "a woman way ahead of her time -- spy, lover and the first professional woman playwright."
Ticket prices are $8 or $6 students. Call x3-2903 or e-mail ensemble-request@mit.edu for reservations.
