The School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (SHASS) has produced an elegant bound volume to commemorate its 50th anniversary celebration in October 2000.
The new book, "Asking the Right Questions: A Colloquium Celebrating the 50th Anniversary," was published in September 2001.
"This volume captures much of the intensity and flavor of the discussion and debate that surrounded SHASS' 50th anniversary and that is so characteristic of intellectual life in the humanities, arts and social sciences at MIT," said SHASS Dean Philip S. Khoury.
"My colleagues and I are especially indebted to Professors Kenneth Manning and Joshua Cohen for their inspired leadership in bringing this book to fruition." The book was edited by Cohen, the Leon and Anne Goldberg Professor in the Humanities, and Manning, the Thomas Meloy Professor of Rhetoric and the History of Science.
The 117-page volume contains essay presentations by scholars and artists who participated in the two-day SHASS colloquium at MIT, as well as photographs from a concert and an evening gala at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
"We present this publication as a record of our celebration of the past 50 years and join our colleagues in [SHASS] in looking forward to many more years of intellectual challenge, scholarship, teaching and Institute service," the editors wrote in their preface.
