Sailing coach Kyle Welch, shown starting a race during a team practice, will not return to coach the 2000 season. While Mr. Welch is helping out part-time with the women's team, Mike Kalin of Kingston, Ontario, joined MIT Tuesday after coaching sailing for Canada at the Olympics in Sydney. Mr. Kalin will coach women's and co-ed sailing and teach physical education classes. Mr. Welch, a 1999 graduate of MIT and a former member of the MIT Sailing Team, is now a network manager and systems administrator for the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, currently supporting the Chandra X-ray telescope. During his four years as a coach, the team was ranked as high as second nationally and had five sailors selected as All-American. As a competitor, Mr. Welch continues to race in the Vanguard 15 and Etchells classes, where he has consistently finished in the top five in both the National and North American Championships.
