The Emile Bustani Middle East Seminar at MIT will celebrate its 15th anniversary this fall with three lectures on contemporary Middle Eastern affairs.
On Tuesday, Oct. 3, Professor Augustus Richard Norton of Boston University's Department of International Relations will lecture on "Lebanon: Post-Withdrawal Symptoms." On October 24, Professor Herbert Kelman of the Center for International Affairs at Harvard University will deliver a lecture titled "The Israeli-Palestinian Peace Process: Requirements for a Historic Compromise." And on November 14, Ms. Elaine Sciolino of the New York Times Washington Bureau will deliver a lecture on "Persian Mirrors: The Elusive Face of Contemporary Iran."
The seminar runs throughout the academic year and is funded by the Bustani family of Beirut, Lebanon in memory of the late Emile M. Bustani, who received the SB in civil engineering in 1933. "Mr. Bustani was one of the Middle East's most prominent businessmen and philanthropists until his premature death in 1963. He was the founder and chairman of the Contracting and Trading Co., a leading construction and engineering firm with projects in the Middle East, Africa and the Far East," said Philip S. Khoury, dean of the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (SHASS) and chairman of the Bustani Seminar, which is sponsored by the Center for International Studies.
