Frank O. Gehry Associates' desig for MIT's new Ray and Maria Stata Center for Computer, Information and Intelligence Sciences was named "Boston's Best 2000 Architectural Project" in the July 26-August 8 issue of the Improper Bostonian. The magazine states, "The architectural model looks like something you'd see on a science-fiction movie set, an almost comical conglomeration of dissimilar forms... It promises to be wacky and wonderful. We can't wait."

Kera Washington, the new director of MITCAN, MIT's African music and dance ensemble, was one of 10 semi-finalists selected in the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz's International African and Latin Jazz Hand Drum Competition, held September 9-10 at the Kennedy Center's Open House Arts Festival in Washington, DC. Judges included Giovanni Hidalgo, Babatunde Olatunji, Ray Barretto, Milton Cardona and Candido -- "all the amazing faces and hands that would make me nervous enough to perform my best," said Ms. Washington, who performed two pieces. "One was a story of Haitian and Brazilian rhythms, a family outing of sorts. The second was a composition of my father's, Keni Washington (a tenor sax player based in Indianapolis), which again featured Brazilian and Haitian rhythms," she said. The competition will be the focus of a documentary on BET Jazz and is a feature on NPRJazz.org.
