A number of undergraduate chemistry majors were honored for their achievements and service at the Chemistry Recognition Dinner, which featured Nobel laureate Elias J. Corey (SB '48, PhD) as the guest speaker. The dinner was held at the Hyatt Regency in Cambridge on May 13th.
The Hypercube Scholar Award for outstanding contributions to the advancement of computers in teaching: Timothy Shiau, a senior from Lexington, MA. The Chemistry Undergraduate Service Award for outstanding service to the department by an undergraduate: Maria Manzoni, a senior from Philadelphia, PA. The Merck Index Award for outstanding scholarship: Janelle Brown, a senior from Warren, NJ; Raquel Lieberman, a junior from Forest Hills, NY; and Timothy McAnaney, a senior from Darien, CT.
The American Institute of Chemists Award presented in recognition of outstanding achievement, ability, leadership, and character was awarded to John Gavenonis, a senior from Larksville, PA. The Chemistry Undergraduate Research Award for outstanding research in the field of chemistry by an undergraduate went to seniors Christina Eng of Wayne, NJ; Ms. Manzoni, and Laura Turculet of Enfield, CT.
The Frederick D. Greene Teaching Award for outstanding teaching in chemistry by an undergraduate went to Mr. Shiau. Two seniors received the Alpha Chi Sigma Award for achievement in research, scholarship, and service to the department: Steven Klei from Massapequa Park, NY, and Michelle Machacek from Acton, MA.
The following chemistry majors were noted for their work as educators, both at MIT and in the community elementary schools.
